Another snow storm here on Long Island. Snow is pretty in December, and ugly in February or later. Today’s storm has closed schools, slowed down traffic and provided some great opportunity for plowing companies.
Thankfully my husband ‘Nanook of the East’ was out early snow blowing the driveway. He cleaned off the cars and made it very easy for me to just get in my car and go. So as is my usual practice, I went to Starbucks to pick up my Venti nonfat w/protein powder latte but they were closed. Oh their staff was there, but it seems that the supply delivery didn’t make it so they closed the store. Same thing happened earlier in the month too during another mega storm. So, in desperate need of my caffeine, I went to a local deli and picked up coffee from there.
That got me thinking about the circumstances we let negatively affect our businesses and our lives.
You see, for the deli owner, that store is their income and so, when possible they prepare in advance, have extra supplies on hand, get up extra early, dig themselves out, dig their store out, put up the coffee and wait for a person like me to walk in. They move around obstacles, press through issues; find ways to serve their customers despite the circumstances. Now I know my $1.50 didn’t make him rich, but how many businesses explode once they win their customers over, by showing just how far they will go for their customers.
For Starbucks, their supply chain involves a lot of people and if the store in Deer Park is closed, there is income coming in from other stores so they sill are ‘in business’ in their other locations. Love their coffee, but man I sure respect the small business owner who gets it done. Stuff happens and businesses can’t always control the circumstances but, that deli owner did what most unsung hero’s do every day, they get it done no matter the circumstances.
What about us, what do we need to get done despite circumstances? My list is pretty long…how about yours?
