Ruh- Roh!
I, Deb Ingino, would like to announce
that I have never made a mistake!
Yes, I would like to announce that, but I can't.
And neither can you, if you're honest.
We all make mistakes, make wrong decisions, or take a wrong turn here and there. We do things we shouldn't do, and we don't do things we should. We are especially given to "ruh-roh's" when we are tired, in the wrong environment, or in times of change. Be aware of these. Prevent them if you can, and where it's too late for prevention, take immediate steps to remediate the fallout.
So what can you do? Well, the answer may be literally right at your fingertips - your computer keyboard has the keys you'll need.
1. Escape
In times of ultimate stress, temptation, and anger, it is best to just "escape". Walk away. Go to a quiet place and regain your composure. It is better to do that than to say or do something you will regret. A five-minute escape could save a lifetime of regret.
2. Caps Lock
This is one you don't want to use. Sending an email using all caps is like yelling at someone. Using the Caps Lock in life is even worse. You will leave a trail of hurt.
3. Function
Sometimes we make mistakes or don't do the things we should simply because we are too exhausted (mentally or physically) to function. We've all seen the challenge a two-year-old can be when he or she is tired. A thirty-two, or forty-two, or fifty-two year old is even worse! Beware when you are tired or down. Don't make a hasty decision when you're in state of dysfunctionality.
4. Shift
Maybe you're in a situation of stress that is caused because you are not working in your strengths or according to your values. For instance, if you are an outgoing, bubbly personality and you love being around people, working in a solitary environment with no people contact will cause you great stress. This is why knowing your strengths is so key. When you operate in your strengths regularly, you will experience lower stress levels. Your work will give you energy rather than steal it. If you're feeling stress, it is either because something doesn't fit or something is out of balance. Shift your focus.
5. Control
Control what you can control. This is a big lesson in life - knowing what to control and what not to. How many of us have tried to control someone else, only to learn that it was a BIG mistake? You cannot control another person. But here's the good news: You CAN control YOU.
6. Space
I can't say for sure, but I'd bet the spacebar is one of the most used keys on the keyboard. There's a lesson there. You have to put spacers between the sentences of your life. Canyouimaginehowharditwouldbetoreadthisnewsletterifitwerewrittenlikethis? It is absolutely critical to take little pauses in life. If we spend too much time in one area of life with no pauses between, every other area will be impacted. Sometimes we think the way to get more done is to work more and more and more; when, in fact, sometimes if we just take a break, we can come back refreshed and accomplish more in much less time.
7. Enter
If your "ruh-roh" is a job that doesn't fit, hit the "enter" button. Start a new line. Join our class to determine your strengths and begin to find work that does fit.
8. Backspace
When you've reached that point where you've made a mistake or life is in disarray, what do you do? Go back. Go back to the point where you got off track. Go back to the person you wronged. Go back to your routines. Go back to your faith. Go back to your foundation. Go back and start again.
9. Delete
Have you taken a big fall because of some bad habits? Delete them immediately. Delete anything that leads to them. Have you taken on too much? Delete some things to restore the balance. Is your mind cluttered with negative thoughts? Delete them.
10. Insert
When we're trying to fix a mistake and get back on track, it's just as important to insert the good as it is to eliminate the bad. For instance, if you're on a diet and all you do is take away food, it won't work. You have to substitute that cherry pie with some fresh cherries. You get the idea.
Life's too short for regrets.
